How Much Does a Bespoke Engagement Ring Cost?

When you're thinking about designing your own custom engagement ring, the first question that usually comes up is "how much will it cost?" which is completely understandable.

The short answer for the UK is that most bespoke engagement rings sit somewhere between £2,500 and £10,000, with simpler designs starting from around £2,500 and high-end commissions going well beyond £10,000 once you add larger stones or rare coloured gems. But there isn't a single fixed price, because a bespoke ring is tailored to you, and the cost depends on the choices you make: the stones, the metal, and how intricate the design is.

Here's a clear guide to what shapes the price, and what to expect when budgeting for your ring.

What Does "Bespoke" Really Mean?

A bespoke engagement ring is made to order, not mass-produced. Bespoke and custom mean the same thing here, a ring designed from scratch with you, rather than chosen off the shelf. You'll be part of the design journey, choosing stones, metals, and design details that feel personal.

This doesn't always mean a single centre stone. You might choose a trilogy ring, a cluster design, or a band set with a scattering of gemstones. The beauty of bespoke is that it reflects your style, not just tradition.

If you'd like to see how the design process translates from computer image to reality, my post on CAD images vs the finished ring is a great place to start.

Is a Bespoke Engagement Ring More Expensive Than Off the Shelf?

It's easy to assume bespoke means more expensive. In reality, it often gives you better value, and there's a good reason for that.

With a bespoke ring you're not paying for brand mark-ups or the overheads of a big high street store. As an independent jeweller, my overheads are far lower, so you're paying for the materials and the skilled craftsmanship that go directly into your ring, rather than a premium on top.

The making itself isn't the expensive part either. The processes involved, like casting, stone setting and finishing, cost much the same as they would for a standard ready-made ring, because my connections within the trade keep those costs in line. What you get on top is a ring designed entirely around you, tailored to your budget, and made to last a lifetime. So a bespoke ring can genuinely be better value and quality than a pre-made one you've seen elsewhere.

Key Factors That Affect the Cost of a Bespoke Engagement Ring

1. Stones (Single or Multiple)

For some, the main investment is one larger diamond or sapphire. For others, the focus is on a composition of smaller stones, such as a trilogy of diamonds, a cluster of coloured gems, or a band of alternating diamonds and sapphires.

  • Single large stone: a diamond or sapphire can range from £1,000 to £50,000 or more, depending on size and quality.
  • Multi-stone rings: smaller stones individually cost less, but intricate layouts and additional setting work can balance the overall price. A ring of three stones making up one carat costs considerably less than a single one carat diamond.

The centre stone is usually the biggest single factor, so small changes to its carat weight, cut, colour and clarity can shift the total price dramatically.

2. Natural or Lab-Grown Stones

This is one of the biggest levers on price. A lab-grown diamond can cost significantly less than a natural one of the same size and quality, so if size is your priority on a tighter budget, lab-grown lets you stretch it much further. It's a personal choice that people tend to feel strongly about either way, so it's worth thinking about how you feel rather than only the saving. I'm happy to show you what your budget buys in each, side by side, so you can decide.

3. Metal Choice

I only work in fine jewellery metals: platinum and 18ct gold (yellow, white, or rose). These contain a high percentage of precious metal, making them durable, hypoallergenic, and classified as fine jewellery.

While 9ct gold is cheaper, it's only 37.5% gold, mixed with other metals that can cause skin reactions. It isn't something I recommend or use, as 18ct gold is a higher quality metal. It's also worth knowing that gold is currently at an all-time high, so platinum is no longer necessarily the more expensive option of the two.

The amount of metal by weight also affects the cost. Precious metals are expensive, so the chunkier the design, the more it costs to produce, and a more delicate ring will cost less.

4. Complexity of the Design

A plain band with a solitaire stone takes less time than a detailed design with halos, engravings, or pavé-set gemstones. Multi-stone settings often involve more craftsmanship to ensure perfect balance and security.

5. Handcrafted Quality vs Mass Production

Bespoke rings are individually crafted in the UK by experienced goldsmiths. Unlike mass-produced rings, this process gives you both exceptional quality and the peace of mind that your ring is built to last. Each bespoke engagement ring from Poppy Elder Fine Jewellery goes through multiple stages of quality control before it reaches you.

Typical Price Ranges for Bespoke Engagement Rings

Here's a guide to give you an idea of where most bespoke commissions sit:

  • Simpler designs with fewer stones: from around £2,500 to £3,500 (18ct gold with carefully chosen diamonds or sapphires).
  • Mid-range bespoke rings: £4,000 to £8,000 (platinum or 18ct gold, with larger single stones, or detailed multi-stone layouts).
  • High-end bespoke rings: £10,000 and above (larger carat weights, rare coloured diamonds, or exceptional one-of-a-kind sapphires).

These are a guide rather than fixed prices, because every ring is built around your own choices.

How to Keep a Bespoke Ring Within Budget

There are several ways to get the look you want for less without compromising on quality:

  • Choose a slightly smaller or lower clarity stone, since inclusions you can't see with the naked eye don't change how the ring looks.
  • Consider a multi-stone design, which can give real visual impact for less than one large diamond.
  • Keep the band on the more delicate side, since less metal means less cost.
  • Consider a coloured gemstone like a sapphire instead of a diamond, or a lab-grown stone, to keep impact while lowering the price.
  • Add personal touches that cost little but mean a lot, like an engraved message inside the band.

Setting a Realistic Budget

When we chat in a consultation, I always ask about budget early on, not to limit your ideas, but to guide you towards the best stones and design options for what you want to spend. I'm not looking at your budget to see how much I can get from you. I'm looking at it so I can point you towards the right stone rather than the wrong one, and so you don't fall in love with something that turns out to be over what you wanted to spend.

A few tips:

  • Be clear about your priorities: do you want a single larger stone, or a design with multiple smaller gems? Is carat weight important, or the overall balance of the ring?
  • Think about wearability: platinum is the most durable, but 18ct gold is a beautiful and lasting option.
  • Remember that craftsmanship and quality matter just as much as size and sparkle.

Final Thoughts: An Heirloom in the Making

Whether you prefer a statement solitaire, a trilogy of stones, or a multi-gem cluster, a bespoke engagement ring is more than a piece of jewellery, it's a future heirloom.

The cost reflects not just the materials, but the story you're creating. Whether your budget is £3,000 or £30,000, the most important thing is that it feels like yours.

Bespoke Engagement Ring Cost FAQs

How much does a custom engagement ring cost in the UK?

Most bespoke engagement rings in the UK fall between £2,500 and £10,000. Simpler designs start from around £2,500, mid-range rings sit around £4,000 to £8,000, and high-end commissions with larger or rare stones go beyond £10,000. There's no single price because the ring is made to your own choices.

Is a bespoke engagement ring more expensive than a high street one?

Not usually. Because you're not paying for brand mark-ups or large retail overheads, a bespoke ring is often better value than a comparable ready-made one, and you get a ring designed entirely around you and your budget.

What's the most expensive part of a bespoke engagement ring?

The centre stone is normally the biggest cost, and it rises sharply with carat weight and quality. Choosing the stone carefully, whether natural or lab-grown, is where the budget is most affected.

How can I make a bespoke ring more affordable?

Choose a slightly smaller or lower clarity stone that's still clean to the eye, consider a multi-stone design or a coloured gemstone instead of one large diamond, keep the band more delicate, or consider a lab-grown stone. I'll always guide you on where to spend and where to save.

Does a custom ring cost extra for the design work?

No. Custom is what I do, so there's no separate design fee or premium for creating something unique, and you won't be charged for changes to the design during the process. I'll simply advise if a change, like a larger stone or a chunkier band, affects the final cost.
