Yes, freshwater pearls are real pearls. They are cultured on pearl farms, but the pearl itself is formed naturally inside the mollusc over time. The term “cultured” simply refers to how they’re started, not to them being fake or synthetic.
Freshwater pearls are grown in rivers and lakes, often have softer shapes and a gentle lustre, and are usually more affordable. Akoya pearls are saltwater pearls, grown mainly in Japan, and are known for being rounder with a brighter, more mirror-like shine. Both are beautiful – it just depends whether you prefer a softer, more organic look or a very classic, polished one.
Pearls are softer than diamonds and metals, so they do need a little more care, but they can absolutely be worn every day. It’s best to avoid harsh chemicals, perfume and hairspray, and to put your pearls on last and take them off first. With a bit of care and the occasional re-string for necklaces, pearl jewellery can last for generations.
Wipe your pearls gently with a soft cloth after wearing them to remove any natural oils or products from your skin. Store them separately from other jewellery so they don’t get scratched, ideally in a soft pouch or lined box.
Pearl prices depend on several factors – type (freshwater vs Akoya vs South Sea/Tahitian), size, shape, lustre and surface quality. Freshwater pearls are generally the most accessible in price, while perfectly round, high-lustre Akoya or South Sea pearls will be more expensive. Most of the pearls I use are cultured pearls. That simply means they are grown with a little help from humans, where a tiny bead or piece of tissue is carefully placed inside the oyster or mussel. The mollusc then naturally coats it in layers of nacre (the iridescent material that gives pearls their shine) over time. This process still takes years and produces real pearls, just with a little help at the start.

They typically take around 1–2 years to grow and are able to produce multiple pearls at a time, which makes freshwater pearl jewellery more affordable while still being beautiful and durable for everyday wear.
Akoya pearls are grown in the sea, mainly in Japan and sometimes China and Vietnam. They’re known for being rounder with a higher, mirror-like shine. Akoya pearls usually take around 1–3 years to produce, and because the process is more delicate and yields fewer pearls per mollusc, Akoya pearl jewellery is usually more expensive than freshwater. They’re a lovely choice if you want that classic, high-lustre “string of pearls” look.
In simple terms, freshwater pearls tend to be more budget-friendly, while Akoya and other saltwater pearls (like South Sea or Tahitian) sit at a higher price point.
