What is Bespoke Jewellery?

Bespoke jewellery is about creating something entirely your own, rather than choosing from what already exists.
It means you can be involved in every part of the process, from selecting your diamond or gemstone to refining the smallest design details so the finished piece feels exactly right for you.

However, not all “bespoke” is the same.

In many jewellery stores, bespoke can often mean choosing from a limited range of pre-designed styles and adjusting a few elements. While that can still create a beautiful piece, it is quite different to a truly bespoke experience.

With my bespoke approach, your piece is designed from the ground up.

You're not limited to existing designs. Instead, we explore everything together, including the proportions, the setting style, the claw shape, the metal, and how each element works as a complete piece. Whether you are drawn to an unusual diamond shape, a specific tone of sapphire, or something you have never quite seen before, the design is built around you.

This might feel a bit overwhelming, but don’t worry as you don't need to have all the answers at the start. Most people I work with have never done this before, and that is exactly what the process is for. I guide you step by step, helping you understand your options and making sure you feel confident in every decision.

This is especially important when creating something as meaningful as an engagement ring. If you are exploring ideas, you can learm more about my bespoke engagement rings to see how each design can be completely tailored.

When you choose to work with me, you will experience a simple, direct design process with no middlemen. Every detail is carefully considered, and each piece is crafted with precision and care.

The result is a piece that feels personal, considered, and completely yours, designed to be worn and treasured for years to come.

Your Bespoke Jewellery Journey with Me

From our very first conversation through to the finished piece, you can be as involved as you want to be.

For some, that means being part of every decision. For others, it means having a bit of guidance and knowing everything is being taken care of. Most people sit somewhere in the middle, and that is exactly how the process is designed. You are supported at every stage, without it ever feeling overwhelming.

Along the way, I will share key moments with you so you always feel confident in how things are coming together. This might be viewing your chosen diamond or gemstones, seeing how the design is developing, or reviewing final details before your piece is completed. Every step is there to make sure it feels right.

The way we communicate is entirely up to you.

Many of my clients are short on time, or planning something as a surprise, so WhatsApp often works best. It allows me to keep you updated, share images and videos, and answer any questions quickly and discreetly. If you would prefer video calls, phone calls or email, that is absolutely fine too.

You don't need to know exactly what you want at the start. That is my role, to guide you, refine your ideas, and make sure the end result feels considered, personal, and something you feel completely confident in choosing.

Your ideas, your preferences, your pace.

Creating your Bespoke Jewellery

Creating a bespoke piece gives you complete control, but that does not mean you need to have everything figured out from the start. Many clients initially hold off getting in touch because they feel they need a clear plan, but more often than not, after our first conversation they say they wish they had reached out sooner, as everything starts to fall into place.

The process is designed to guide you through each decision, helping you focus on what matters most and where your investment will have the greatest impact. For some, that might be the size and presence of a diamond. For others, it is the exact tone of a sapphire or a detail that carries personal meaning.

I take the time to understand not just what you are looking for, but why. The story behind a piece is just as important as how it looks, and often it is the smaller details that make it feel truly special. This could be something subtle, like a hidden engraving, a meaningful carat weight, or a design element that only you understand.

Most bespoke pieces begin with an initial idea, even if it is quite loose.

From there, I will source a selection of diamonds or gemstones that reflect both your preferences and your budget, so you can clearly see how different options look and feel in real life. As the centre stone is usually the most significant part of the investment, this step brings clarity early on and allows us to refine the design in a way that feels considered and right for you.

Once the stone has been chosen, we move into the design stage. You will be able to review sketches and realistic computer-aided images, so you can feel completely confident in how your piece will look before it is made.

At every stage, the aim is to keep the process simple, clear, and enjoyable, so the end result feels exactly as it should.

Unusual Loose diamonds & gemstones for bespoke jewellery

Why Choose Poppy Elder For Your Bespoke Jewellery?

I’ve been designing bespoke jewellery professionally since 2006, but my experience goes back much further than that. Growing up in a family where jewellery manufacturing was part of everyday life means the standards I hold myself to aren’t just professional, they’re personal.

As a third-generation jeweller, quality, craftsmanship and honesty have always been at the core of how I work.

Before starting Poppy Elder Fine Jewellery, I designed diamond rings for well known retailers. Over time, I found myself drawn more and more to pieces that felt a little different. Unusual diamonds, distinctive gemstones, and designs that have a sense of individuality rather than following what everyone else is doing.

Today, I work closely with clients who are often coming to this process for the first time. Many feel unsure at the start. They have an idea, a budget, and a desire to create something that feels truly right for their partner, but they aren’t always sure how to get there.

My role is to guide you through that process, helping you make informed decisions without it ever feeling overwhelming. There’s no pressure, no unnecessary jargon, and no expectation to spend more than you’re comfortable with. Just clear advice, honest guidance, and a shared focus on creating something you’ll feel proud to give.

That’s what bespoke jewellery should feel like. Personal, considered, and completely yours.

Ethical Bespoke Jewellery made in the UK.

It’s important to me that every piece of jewellery I create is made responsibly, as well as beautifully.

All bespoke pieces and designs within The Signature Collection are crafted by an experienced team of goldsmiths in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. This means you can expect the level of care, precision and quality that comes with British-made craftsmanship.

Every diamond I use is carefully sourced in line with the Kimberley Process, ensuring it has been responsibly mined and traded. If having a fully traceable origin is important to you, I can also source Canadian diamonds, allowing you to follow your stone back to the mine it came from.

The same care is taken when selecting coloured gemstones. I work with a trusted network of suppliers, and can also source stones such as Australian or Montana sapphires, which are known for their more transparent and ethical mining practices.

For those who would like to take this further, I offer Fairtrade Gold, which supports mining communities directly while maintaining high environmental and ethical standards.

All pieces are created using responsibly sourced materials and crafted in workshops certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council.

If these details matter to you, I will guide you through the options so you can make choices that feel right, both aesthetically and ethically.
